At this age, children are at such an exciting stage in their reading journey. Six-year-olds often love the comfort of picture books but are also ready to explore simple chapter books and start reading more independently.
Finding the right books for 6-year-olds can help spark a lifelong love of reading, whether it’s bedtime stories you share together or early readers they enjoy on their own.
In this post, I’ve put together a list of the best books for 6-year-olds—stories my own child has loved, from fun and engaging read-alouds to beginner-friendly books perfect for building confidence.
Reading with your child at this age is still so important: it grows their vocabulary, expands their imagination, and opens up whole new worlds of adventure.
The Magical Worlds Complete Collection - Join Joe, Beth, Frannie and Rick as they go on adventures. Fun books to read together. The first three books are also very similar to some of the Enid Blyton stories on Yoto so a great accompaniment.
The Faraway Tree Adventures - This is a collection of 10 story books with fun, colour pictures following Joe, Beth, Frannie and Rick on even more of their adventures. Great for independent reading or a book at bedtime.
Daisy and the Trouble with....books - Written from the perspective of a 6 or 7-year-old girl called Daisy. She narrates her adventures as she finds herself getting into all sorts of predicaments. Great fun to read and simple enough for 6-year-olds to start reading themselves.

Rainbow Magic Books - The Rainbow Magic fairy books by Daisy Meadows are a hugely popular series for children aged 5–8, especially those just starting to enjoy chapter books. Each story follows a pair of friends who team up with magical fairies to solve problems and defeat pesky goblins. With over 200 titles to collect, from the Rainbow Fairies to the Sports Fairies, these books are perfect for young readers who love adventure, friendship, and just a touch of sparkle.
The Happy Families books by Ahlberg & Ross are a classic collection of funny, easy-to-read stories that children adore. Each book follows a different quirky family—like Mrs Wobble the Waitress or Master Bun the Baker’s Boy—with playful illustrations and simple text perfect for early readers. Ideal for 5–7 year olds, these books are great for children starting to read independently, while still being fun to share aloud together.
Dr Seuss books - My absolute favourite is Green Eggs and Ham. His way with words is amazing and all his books are just so fun to read and to listen to. They also invite children to join in and use lots of fun, silly made-up words like in "There's a Wocket in my Pocket!"
Winnie and Wilbur - Follow along as Winnie the Witch and Wilbur the cat have mishap after mishap but everything turns out all right in the end. With great detailed illustrations, this is one of the collections my daughter asks for regularly.
The Lighthouse Keeper Collection - From the classic The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch to The Lighthouse Keeper’s Rescue and beyond, children love the humorous situations, colourful illustrations, and gentle storytelling. Perfect for ages 4–7, these books are ideal for reading aloud together and are a timeless addition to any child’s bookshelf.
